HAWAI’I WATER CODE | A SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM

Nature offers an exquisitely designed system that supports harmony. Ahupua’a, the Native Hawaiian system of land division, is informed by these same principles to create a sustainable and renewable agricultural structure.

At the heart of this system is a source of fresh water.

In the wake of the wildfires on August 8, 2023, the issue of water rights has come squarely into focus for the people of Maui.

For generations, the majority of West Maui’s water resources have been diverted for plantations and development, turning what was once wetlands into an unrecognizable dryland.

The Hawai’i State Water Code was signed into law in 1987 in an effort to return to sustainable management of this important resource. The code is managed by a 7-member commission; one of those seats has recently opened.

This documentary short-film created by Native Hawaiian filmmaker Amanda Leipuanani Robson explores the critical importance of appointing someone who carries wisdom of the indigenous method of water resource management as the new commission member.
